Going through this thread, it seems Telstra routing sucks for Japan too :/

Any way around this short of using a tunneling service like lowerping, or switching ISPs?

Tunneling service is your easier option. Nothing else you can do besides maybe try to contact Telstra but very unlikely they'll give a shit unfortunately for their customers.

I have some concerns using tunneling services :/

To SE, it will look like everyone using the service is playing from the same location, and that usually = RMT (gold farmers). People have had some problems in the past getting banned in other MMOs over this. Most MMOs, after explaining the situation and investigating reinstated accounts, but SE has a reputation for not being very understanding.. at least, they weren't back when I played FFXI in 2003/2004. Lot of people got banned (not me) for nothing back then and SE wouldn't allow any appeals.

I would think that legally, if you inform them of your intent to use a tunnelling service to improve your game experience, they agree / say you are allowed to do so (which they pretty much have to? because it isn't in the TOC) and you keep those records, then there is no way you would be ~banned~.

After-all, the last thing they want on their hands are high profile lawsuits killing their reputation even further.

That being said though, depending on the nature of the tunnelling service, security flags are likely to be tripped, your account flagged as suspicious and ~locked~. For your own benefit that is (e.g. a precautionary measure against someone in some other country hacking your account and trying to…).

You will then of course be wrestling with customer service constantly getting your account unlocked every single time… (the best option is getting SE to WORK WITH the tunnelling services in question.)

There doesn't seem to be much of a difference from Melbourne or most of Australia for that matter. In line with what others are experiencing, I get about 200-350 to either JP or NA depending on time of day but ping to JP is so far always slightly better by about 30-50.

There's a huge difference depending on your ISP in Australia as has been shown in this thread i.e. most of the people on Telstra get bad connections (200ms~) but everyone from iiNet that I have seen get expected latencies to Japan (sub 150ms).

I think the Telstra connections are routed to west coast NA and back or something ridiculous like that.

Location doesn't make that much difference like you said though, more important to be with an ISP which correctly routes international traffic to Asian & SEA countries.

Yup - with iiNet here. I consistently ping 130-140 to JP, and 260-280 to NA. Even playing XI with telstra was horrible (was on an NA server there though).

Yeah I am in that situation atm, being on Telstra and getting around 210-220ms latency to JP servers.

I am looking to potentially churn over to iiNet or Internode, but I am actually on a RIM, so if I did choose that option, I would be on Telstra Wholesale, which isn't a problem for the International Link, but it might mean I lose my Open2 ADSL2 port, and get bumped backt o 1500mbps ADSL, as they might be reserved for Telstra customers.

There is also the fact that NBN is due for construction in my area next month (depending on election results i guess), so i don't want to be locked into a contract.
