The translation features in FF11 and FF14 make playing on a JP server not that big a deal honestly.

I spent a lot of time playing with JP players early on in FF11 and I don't speak any Japanese myself. Being in the same time-zone is also very convenient.

The issue I find with JP is often they just don't *want* to play with EN players..

This might have something to do with the reputation NA players tend to have in the JP community.

Sure, some JP groups will take an EN player, but it isn't as frequent. I guess with the content finder you can probably get by, with simply changing your language settings to JP or whatever..

I truly don't think the latency, despite being a touch higher in the states is a huge concern.. Or at least won't be by the time release happens.

As I understand it, the Japenese have a lot of short-hand commands they like to use that are rather inconsistent with North American approaches. That is your first barrier. The second is racism, because while I hate to admit it, people from the US have a… stereotyped reputation in some circles, often undeserved.

The thing about being from SEA is that the moment most people in the world find this out, their attitude completely changes, so we tend to get a bit less stupid race-bias directed at us.

I recommend people put their physical location on their in-game profile.

On Balmung i've never had a probliem with the JP players. teamed upa few times & flirted in-game….Still not sure if that player was male or female tho.
Alot of Japanese students actuly know a little English since they learn a second language in school.

Generaly they were Nice, true they generally avoid partys if at least 1 or more people cant translate or ruffly translate, but that wasn't always the case since they knew what to do, in a ENG party as long as you say "White mage" or "Tank?" they run to there spot, do there job no probliems.
On the other hand if you in a JP party & they say 治療師 Then you go in as a DD/Tank they get pissed because the asked you to be a "healer/White mage" e.t.c.
As for main quests they help you out alot as long as you use emotions in game to let them know your grateful.
Also if your using Google or Bing to translate tell them your Using Google Translate so they know the words/sentences might be backwards & that it will also take some time to reply.

You don't say this attitude change towards SEA players is more deserved? T_T

There are tricks around the racism, indeed. And I personally don't care if it is deserved or not, since I just want to play.

Unfortunately, Aegis was rather notorious for the poor attitude between languages.

I've been playing with JP players on Masamune for a while. The people in the JP ls usually will take anyone as long as they are willing to use the auto translate. :)

Yeah this is exactly right.. The racism does indeed come from the USA reputation.

I do think that it has begun to stem into more of a generalized EN racism in XIV though. I can sort of understand where these generalizations come from though, as American humor is extremely different to many other cultures. Usually a lot more crude and upfront, which often can be taken offensively.

Basically all I am trying to get at, is that many JP players tend to choose not to play with EN on these grounds, which has nothing to do with the language barrier. Getting around that can sometimes be somewhat difficult.

Ridill was pretty bad as well in comparison to what people from other servers say about this. I only found one group of JP players that were willing to play with me

Hey guys, I have concerns about going to a JP server. A post in Zam forums made some points, which I'll copy/paste it on here. Anyone has any differing opinions on these points?

Reasons I don't think JP servers are a good idea for English speaking players:
1) Unless you can somhow score pings below 100ms from Aussie/NZ, it would not make much difference over all. Slightly laggy compared to slightly laggier won't change much in the gameplay. Besides, the main issue will be lag spikes, especially during peak hours. And being in JP servers we will be in their peak hour, so I am expecting huge lag spikes.

2) Members in a linkshell (or is it called Free Company in FFXIV? I didn't play 1.0) will come and go over time due to real life commitments, conflicts etc. In a JP server, it would be hard to get new members as the older ones leave or quit.

3) In my experience in FF XI, JP players generally don't like to mingle or do stuff with non-JP players, probably because of language barriers. For the preciously few in my large LS that are JP with decent English, their primary LS would always be a JP one. So if you were going to do some group activity or crafting help but your LS members are either busy or simply not interested, you would be unlikely to get a pickup party for help.

4) An important attraction of a large MMO is to be able to mingle with friends and strangers alike. In JP servers, the chances of mingling with them are low.

5) Some are worried about time zone difference to the US players for group activities. I don't think it will make a difference in a JP server. Unless you speak fluent Japanese, you are still going to be limited to your friends when you play. Besides, most players will have whole days free in the weekends to play with US players.
