I'm an American living and working in Japan, and lead a Linkshell on the Aegis server called "Legacy." We have an extremely active NA player base, and have been building up an international focus with several talented players operating during JST peak hours, and have some European members as well.
During CB3, I'll do my best to support Kairi Sgheart, also a member of my Linkshell and the Oceania forums here to test the effects of server latency on various content to help inform members who are concerned about ping when considering server selection options. I have experience on the Ifrit Extreme encounter from both an (East Coast) American IP as well as from within Japan. From my experiences in 1.0, I'd suggest that NA ping was not limiting for any content, although I did experience a slight advantage after moving to Japan. We did have linkshell members clear Ifrit Ex with 600+ ping (England, China via VPN) but they did sustain more damage than average. Hopefully the new servers themselves are less laggy, to help encourage international groups such as my own to stick together despite the data center regionalization.
I hope that I can contribute meaningfully to this community! Thanks! -Taru Taru, Legacy of Aegis http://legacyffxiv.com
That is certainly a more unique perspective to get, and a refreshing one at that! I do agree, the latency isn't a huge setback by game design at this stage at least.
