This is just an overview of why I chose a NA realm (Behemoth) over Tonberry for my new character.
The flaws I see with an Oceanic community deciding that SEA/Oceanic players should start their characters on a JP server during the BETA phase of a game are very valid. MOST new players, who purchase the game in Australia, will by default and due to the fact they do not speak Japanese, will join a NA realm.
What this means is the limit of English speaking players you will be able to socialize with or recruit, is limited to those who speak Japanese, who read forums, and those who were in BETA and read the forums. Also due to sheer numbers game, servers will be full and ques to enter will be annoying, and with full servers, leads to server issues and latency.
With an NA server, all new players from Australia that haven't read the forums or anything like that, will be playing on there, as well as the NA community. Latency really isn't that big of an issue from what I've seen. (PVP yet to be experienced) Duty Finder can link you with players from a JP server who are on when you are anyways. Most people speaking English makes voice comms much easier.
I personally have chosen Behemoth, as it is the majority ruling for Oceanic/SEA players starting new characters on a NA/English speaking server. If anyone doesn't want to be on a JP server, you're welcome to join me, just let me know via reply.
for your info, duty finder do not match you up with players on the jp data center. It will just match you up with platers on the same data center.
In 1.0, i rolled on fabul, which now is balmung. I could count the number of oceanic players with just my hands :x/ The rest were NA, and after a few months, it end up with just less than 5 oceanic. Having a party in the same timezone as i am was not easy. True i can mix and chat with the NA people if i wake up or sleep odd hours, but their peak period of play is usually our time of work or studies. Many other players from various servers that were not the main oceanic hub, had similar experiences.
Furthermore, end game battles are going affect players with high latency, after much testing done by many, if the latency makes u unable dodge out from ifrit and such attacks in beta, it will get worst with ifrit hard, extreme, garuda and others. When at those difficulty, 1 hit from a special move will take down 3/4 of your hp or even death.
These are reasons why players choose a jp data center and why we decide to gather together in the unofficial servers. If latency by all means doesn't affect u in either server, then by all means go ahead with the NA server :). but if it does affect you greatly like me and others, it is wiser to gather and start at jp data center, rather than level up high and find out latency kept making you have bad experiences in end game content.
I also agree with you, especially in a few years when the EN community on those JP servers slowly end up quitting the game.. I fear that the EN population will begin to dwindle in the long run, and as someone who expects to be playing for a long time - the best option is honestly playing with an EN community..
Everyone of course has their own priorities, and that is why we have 4 "unofficial" servers.

I don't really think this assumption is completely valid, from past MMO's this hasn't been the case.
The majority of SEA/Oceanic players end up on the same server, they don't pick random servers. That's why we end up with full pop unofficial SEA/Oceanic servers in every MMO I can remember in recent history because we have these discussion beforehand, vote/choose a server to congregate on and and up with plenty of ppl to play with (usually to the point of the server getting queues heh).
Just as a follow up question, how would the new players joining a US server know which one to join without visiting a forum or talking to someone who has visited a forum to determine the server?

This is going to apply to every single server at launch, regardless of location. Post launch i doubt it will be an issue, given the pattern from previous mmos.

I don't expect there to be any significant amount of NA players on weekdays during our primetime.

As someone who has played western MMOs for over 10 years, i can assure you that there will be moments that will frustrate you due to the higher ping. In PVE it is usually manageable and good players won't be very affected, but expect players that don't react immediately to get hit by avoidable attacks frequently. In PVP, depending on game mechanics, you may be at a downright disadvantage in some situations when fighting players with 1/5th of your ping (or even less).

Doesn't really matter as people aren't picking JP servers specifically to play with JP players.

Doesn't have anything to do with server region as well. How often do you get a stranger from duty finder to get on your VOIP, regardless of language?
