I would just like to point out people whose done research have much higher potential to stay interested and connected with the game for longer periods (i.e going to a JP server). Whilst during launch you will have fresh oceanic people scattering across NA servers, in the long run I believe the oceanic communities will be much tighter on the JP server.
I will personally be choosing the English speaking servers. (Behemoth, NA)
To me it just seems a bit risky if you aren't joining with a fairly well established online community to join a non English speaking server.
I can totally understand the ping related issues but my experience with almost every MMO has been >300ms anyway so kind of getting used to it.
Not to mention the fairly negligible decrease to (around) 260 doesn't really justify the risk of being caught as part of a small minority of English speakers during peak hours.
Definitely for some people I think the change in ping is super dramatic, 40MS however isn't that much of a jump I wouldn't expect? (Which is what it is in my case)
I'm no professional but wouldn't that be about 0.04s?
Would love to hear from somebody a bit more knowledgeable :D
Putting the latency aside… (as it is not actually latency that ~totally~ kills an online game but rather ~packet loss~)
I would imagine that the NA community that would be playing 3~8 AM in the morning Montreal time would be just as small… no?
Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand all within about 3~hour time zone and all have (at least some) English speakers. There is an in built translation function as well. (which if FF11 is anything to go off, is more than enough for communicating about game concepts <- especially when you are using macros to efficiently do so.)
Just some objective thoughts. (I personally chose a JP server because from experience I don't really like the american gaming community and well, language isn't a barrier.)
MOST new players, who purchase the game in Australia, will by default and due to the fact they do not speak Japanese, will join a NA realm.Umbra Sanctum
As Hidenshi mentioned in the above post, Australians will not be the only English speaking players on the JP servers. You might get a decent amount of Australians playing on launch (on the NA servers) but I highly doubt it will match the total number of players from Asia/Oceanic (on the JP servers). Also, the number of people who research unofficial oceanic servers prior to launch is higher than you think.
In my experience JP players actually like Australian people anyway =) I used to play with JP all the time back in 1.0, most of them are better players than the majority of the NA community anyways.
The die hard pro end game players who are Australian will likely be on the JP server so I am defiantly going with that, plus people already know me there which is cool.
PS: I am so over playing games with lag, I want my FF14 experience to be as lag free as humanly possible.
